Mechanical engineering
Machine design is a systematic and multi-step process that requires in-depth technical knowledge and creativity to succeed. At the beginning of the machine design process, it is important to define the requirements. The requirements definition process identifies the needs of the users and defines the objectives and limits of the machine’s operation and performance. From the requirements, the essential functions of the machine are identified and concepts for their implementation are developed. The concepts are systematically evaluated, and the best overall solution is selected for further development. Machine design creates functional, safe and efficient machines that meet user needs and requirements.
Design tools and methods
Machine design makes extensive use of computer-aided engineering tools, such as 3D design manuals (Computer Aided Design – CAD). CAD software enables the efficient creation and analysis of accurate designs, significantly speeding up the design process. CAD software also allows the computer simulation of the motion of mechanisms and the strength of structures. The strength of the designed structures is analysed using the Finite Element Method (FEM). FEM simulations can be used to determine the behaviour (vibration, deflection, strength) of even the most complex assemblies under different loading conditions. The simulations help to ensure the quality of the design process.
Material choices in machine design
Materials engineering is an essential part of machine design. Material choices and component design have a direct impact on performance and cost. Factors such as machinability, strength, weight, corrosion, temperature and price are all factors to be considered in material selection. The most common materials used in mechanical engineering include steel, aluminium, plastics and composites. Each material has its own properties that need to be taken into account in the design of the machine.
User experience and ergonomics
User Experience Design (UX) is also an important part of machine design, as humans are involved in everything that needs to be designed, at least during the manufacturing process. By taking user experience and ergonomics into account in machine design, we ensure that a machine or tool is meaningful and safe to use. Things to consider include the layout and intuitiveness of controls and displays, the weight of mobile machinery and dimensions.
Mechatronics
Machines are increasingly powered by electricity and computers, a combination of mechanics and electronics called mechatronics. So, in addition to mechanisms, mechatronic machines include sensors, actuators and robotics. The design of mechatronic machines therefore requires a broader multidisciplinary understanding of electrical engineering and automation.
Environmental impact
Sustainability is an increasingly important part of machine design, which must take into account the environmental impact of the machine’s entire life cycle. This is why energy and material efficiency and recyclability are assessed early in the design process. The development of environmentally friendly solutions is an essential part of the production of responsible operators.
